Kimberley Experience






We have described our trip in two parts. Our experience has two interwoven dimensions.
Part 1.
Sleeping in a swag under the very bright stars and waking up to a pristine dawn in one of the remotest parts of Australia was a memorable highlight.
On Peter’s 60th birthday, we were camped on the banks of the King Edward River, when a huge flock of cockatoos gave us an early morning raucous rendition of ‘happy birthday’.
Other highlights were:
Absolutely amazing countryside and scenic views of escarpments, mountain ranges, waterfalls and so on.
A helicopter flight over the Mitchell Plateau and Falls;
After having no access to showers for 48 hours, being able to swim in the numerous water holes and under waterfalls with cool clear water;
Driving over1000 km along the Gibb River and Kalumburu tracks with their dust and corrugations and through 72 river crossings (we only counted those with water);
The people of the Kimberley’s, their camaraderie and how people support and look after each other in that remote part of the world including the cattle truck drivers that assisted us, the Aboriginal people we met along the way and the workers and owners of Drysdale River Station- Wayne and Lisa (‘Lees’ is a very colourful and direct 26 year old that part owns and runs Drysdale River Station and helps muster cattle. She completed her engineer’s certificate by spending a few months on a prawn trawler);
Another helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle ranges. This was an awesome place to visit and deservedly has its World Heritage status;
A cruise on the Ord River
and the challenging bushwalks up some of the Gorges and to the waterfalls.

Part 2
The signs were there from the start.
We nearly missed our flight to Perth because Peter had not set the alarm clock correctly; Susan’s luggage did not arrive with our flight to Broome and, on our second day, Peter lost his hat and it appeared every decent hat in Broome had been sold to the many tourists.
The Tour operator for our 12 day camping safari was late picking us up on day 1 of the trip. His name was Dragan and he said he was an ‘emergency fill-in’ and ‘don’t make jokes about my name’. (We later discovered that he was someone who had made his fortune in the IT industry and was the new owner of ALL TERRAIN safari Company – of 4 months)
He was inexperienced and at times incompetent bordering on negligent.
On day 2 he left the tool compartment open and we had a trail of tools, tarpaulins strewn along the track between Manning Gorge and Mt Barnett Station.
That afternoon started with a loud banging noise on the chassis under our feet. He ignored our expressed concern (‘Its probably just the axe bouncing around in the compartment underneath the vehicle’) It turned out later that the housing for the suspension had sheared off and the springs were about to smash through the floor of the chassis.
While this was happening, he was driving too fast down the Kalumburu track and clipped a stationary truck with flashing light (carrying 44 gal drums of helicopter fuel) smashing his side mirror and the window adjacent to where we were sitting. Glass all over and down the back of Peter’s shirt. We were very lucky we escaped with a few minor abrasions in what could have been a disastrous accident.
A tarpaulin was taped over the space left from the smashed window and with the help of some passing cattle truck drivers, bush mechanics was applied to the springs and suspension (a log of wood chained in place between the suspension and chassis) and we were on our way again. Another 4 wheel drive All Terrain vehicle was dispatched from Broome (about 1000 km away) to come and rescue us.
The bush repair lasted for the 80 km we drove at 10km per hour along the Kalumburu track until we tried to cross a river when the repair collapsed.
Eventually the rescue vehicle arrived and 20 min after we clambered on board and transferred all food, luggage and swags – you guessed it – the same thing happened. Springs collapsed and smashed through into the tool cabinet of the second vehicle.
A young English backpacker on board who happened to be a mechanic and had been assisting all the way, burst into tears and walked off into the bush. He was angry and frustrated. He said the cause of many of the problems was poor maintenance of the vehicles.
People from Drysdale River Station were contacted by satellite phone and picked us up. We spent 2 nights camping there while one of the vehicles was repaired. A chance to have hot showers, cold beers and wash some clothes.

On the road again, we experienced 2 flat tyres, the luggage compartment was left open after one tyre repair and although no luggage was lost all our luggage was completely covered in dust and, we had another broken spring when we reached Kunanurra.

Of course we were a day late arriving back in Broome and despite numerous assurances from the tour operator, Dragan had failed to cancel the Sunday night booking at the motel (He had given them the wrong name) and the motel wouldn’t give us a refund.

All in all a memorable experience.
The Kimberley region is an iconic place to visit – its tough, its challenging and very beautiful once you make the effort. And, we had a real bonus. With the tour operator being so incompetent, we had experience money can’t buy. We were also able to interact with people of the Kimberley that tourists wouldn’t normally encounter.

Tasmanian Trip 2007











As we reached the top of the ‘Cradle’ on Cradle Mountain, the trekking party sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Susan, celebrating her 60th in style!
On the day, it was a long 14km, 7 hour trek in windy, muddy, drizzly conditions in a stunning environment – but we made it! The cloud and drifting mist added to the atmosphere.

We enjoyed the simplicity and unspoilt nature of Tasmania – the small villages, fresh food, clean air and soft water. We came across a bunch of high school students socializing in the mall in Launceston – and, they were polite and well-mannered. A rarity on the mainland.

We had expected Tasmania to be as green as a Granny Smith apple, but found the Eastern part of Tasmania and Launceston in drought and more like a dried and forgotten apple core – like most of South Australia.

In the town of St. Helens we had a Fawlty Towers/Dickensian kind of experience. We were staying in a B&B run by John and Jill.
If it weren’t so fascinating, we would have packed our bags and fled the place.
From the time we arrived, Jill, a large person with a mountain of teased hair, was sitting at a table in the dining room, surrounded with a mess of papers and books (It seemed as if she hadn’t moved from her seat the whole time we were there and was still there the next morning when we emerged for breakfast)
While our bed linen and bathroom etc were clean and tidy, the large light hanging over the bed was covered in cobwebs.
John, the cook, was a big bald man, with a squint and a big hairy belly and was naked apart from a very short pair of shorts, opening some oysters purchased from a local oyster farm.
Jill: ‘Them oysters need some lemon on them.’
John: ‘Yairs, oysters taste better with some lemon.’
Jill: ‘Have youse got a lemon for them for their oysters?’
John: ‘Yairs, I’ll cut up some lemon for the oysters’
Jill: ‘yes, have some lemon with them oysters…..’ and so on for about 5 mins.

Most of the B&B’s and cabins we stayed in were excellent in Tassie, but you sure meet some characters on occasions.

While Tasmania has a dark past and ‘other side’ to it (Port Arthur, treatment of Aborigines in the past and symbolized in the present day by the huge logging trucks that bully their way around the narrow country roads), the experience overall was very pleasurable. Some of the highlights were:
The architecture and number of beautifully preserved buildings.
The 11.5 km walk on the circuit that included Wineglass Bay, Hazards Beach on the Freycinet Peninsula.
The taste of an apple plucked straight from the tree – crispy, juicy, ecstatic!
The conservatory and Peter Cundall’s Vegie patch at the Botanic Gardens in Hobart
A long 12km day walk around Maria Island.
Seeing a Platypus in the wild
Salamanca Market
The magnificent old & tall trees with a presence that makes you feel like kneeling before them. The Tahune Air walk.
Walking along pristine beaches with white sand and clear sparkling water.
A meal of barbecued octopus at the Touchwood Café in Stanley.
The exhibition of Huon Pine furniture in Hobart Museum.
Russell and Nelson Falls and the Franklin and Gordon Rivers. Thank you Bob Brown and all the other activists.
And lots lots more.

It was a magical 3 weeks and we only lost one sun hat, an old library book, pair of sunglasses and a pedometer.

Recipes



Zucchini Egg Noodle Pie

4 bundles thin egg noodles (these are usually called bird's nest egg noodles and look like liitle bundles)
2 grated zucchini or 1/2 bunch spinach
1 onion, chopped
1 or 2 crushed garlic
2 eggs
2 tablespoons S.R. flour
1 teaspoon worcestshire sauce
1 cup milk (or a mixture milk and cream)
1/2 cup grated cheese

1.Cook egg noodles in boiling water, drain and put in oiled casserole dish
2.Fry onion till soft, add garlic
3.Add zucchini or spinach, cook a bit till softened
4.Beat the eggs till mixed, add flour, sauce,salt and pepper, milk/cream and grated cheese.
5.Put zucchini/spinach over noodles, mix in a bit
6.Pour over egg milk mixture. Sometimes may need to add more milk till it's all covered.
7.Can also put sliced tomatoes on top.
8.Bake in 180 deg oven about 25 mins till golden.


Zucchini and Feta Pie

350 g zuch (about 4 medium ones) coarsely grated

3 eggs
¼ cup olive oil
1 cup herbs eg chives, parsley, dill, basil - mixed (whatever you like)
110 g feta, crumbled
60 g grated parmesan
½ cup (75 g) Self Raising flour
2-3 tomatoes (sliced), or cherry toms.(halved) to put on top of pie

Preheat oven 160 deg (fan forced) or 180 deg (not fan forced)
Place grated zuch into a colander to drain, about 10 mins or so. Weigh down with a plate or dish to force water out.
Whisk eggs in a large bowl. Add in olive oil, chopped herbs.
Give zuch an extra press to get out water. Stir zuch into egg mixture.
Add feta cheese, parmesan. Season with salt and pepper.
Add flour and mix well.
Put into a square or round cake tin which has been lined with buttered baking paper. You can also sprinkle bottom of lined tin with breadcrumbs or polenta, enough to lightly cover bottom of tin.
Press tomatoes into top of mixture.
Bake in oven 45-50 mins till top is springy to touch, looks set and golden.
Cool in tin for about 10 mins .
Invert pie onto a plate or cut in tin, whatever is easiest.
Good with a salad.


Pasta with Spinach, Garlic and Parmesan

2 cloves garlic, sliced
red chilli, seeded and chopped
about 100g baby English spinach leaves, or any other nice spinach (chop up if leaves are big)
¼ cup grated Parmesa
salt and pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil

spaghetti of choice

While pasta is cooking, heat oil on low heat in small saucepan and gently cook garlic and chilli till soft.

Drain pasta, put back in large saucepan, add garlic, chilli oil mixture, even add more virgin olive oil if you like too. Add the spinach leaves, parmesan and mix through. The heat from the pasta will cook the spinach and melt the cheese. You can also add other herbs – basil, rocket etc. season to taste.
This recipe can be varied eg add some chopped olives, capers


Peter’s Sweet Potato Pasta

1/2 sweet potato, peeled and cubed (amount depends on how much you want)
1 tablespoon pine nuts, gently cook in bit of olive oil in small saucepan. Watch this as they can burn quickly.
2 garlic, crushed, also cooked gently in olive oil
basil, parsley, rocket (whatever you have around)
grated or shaved parmesan cheese

Peter steams the sweet potato until soft. I prefer to steam for about 5 mins then bake in the oven (in olive oil) till browned, about 15 – 20 mins.

While this is cooking also cook pasta of choice.

When pasta is cooked, drain and stir through cooked sweet potato, garlic, pine nuts and parmesan and whatever herbs you like.


Vegetable Lasagna

This is a bit more fiddly and time consuming but tastes good.

I use a mixture of veges, but you choose what you like. These are recommended:-
1 eggplant (aubergine), sliced
butternut pumpkin or ordinary or even sweet potato, sliced
2 red capsicum, remove seeds quartered
2 zucchini sliced lengthways

Toss veges in olive oil and bake in 190 deg oven till cooked, about 35 – 40 mins.
While these are cooking make tom sauce, Or you could use a ready made tom pasta sauce.
I cook one chopped onion in olive oil til soft, add some chopped garlic, then 2 cans chopped toms, tablespoon tomato paste,1 teaspoon sugar. Cook gently for about 15 mins or so.

Also make a white sauce. If you have a recipe for this use that. Otherwise try this
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in saucepan, then stir in 1 tablespoon plain flour til nicely mixed and let mixture bubble for about 1 min. Take saucepan off stove, and then gradually stir in about 2 cups warm milk. Make sure you stir in slowly and carefully or it will go lumpy. Put back on a very gentle heat and keep stirring till mixture thickens and start to simmer, you may need to add more milk if its too thick. Stir in some grated cheese, about ¾ cup eg mozzarella, parmesan. Plus salt and pepper

Now you put all these ingredients together in layers in a good sized baking dish. You can make up your own layers or try this.
So ½ the tomato mixture on bottom of dish, then layer some pre cooked lasagna sheets, then ½ the veges, another layer of lasagna sheets then rest of tomato sauce, rest of veges and finally the white sauce on top. Can also put some more grated cheese on top
Bake in 190 deg oven till golden on top about 25 -30 mins.

Chick Pea Salad

4-6 small white onions (or 2 larger ones cut into quarters)
1-2 cans chick peas (depends how much you want, 1 can is enough for a few people)
½ cup raisins 1 cup chopped parsley
1 tablespoon each of chopped fresh coriander, basil, mint (you can do more of these depending on taste and what’s available)
¼ chopped preserved lemon or grate skin of a ½ fresh lemon

Dressing:
½ cup virgin olive oil
¼ cup lemon juice
3 cloves garlic, crushed
½ red chilli, chopped (to your taste or leave it out)
Mix well together.

Roast onions in some of the olive oil, about 1 tablespoon in 200 deg oven. About 20 mins until golden.

Combine drained chick peas, cooled onion, raisins, parsley, coriander, mint and basil and lemon.
Mix dressing through salad.

SPANAKOPITA (SPINACH PIE)

1 bunch spinach
olive oil about ¾ cup
1 bunch spring onion, chopped
150 grams feta cheese
1 cup cottage cheese
100 gr mozzarella cheese or cheddar
3 tablespoons parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1tsp chopped fresh or dried dill
3 to 4 eggs
filo pastry
sesame seeds

Wash and Roughly chop spinach (can take off stems if too thick). Put about ½ in saucepan (little bit of water in bottom) and steam about 3 to 4 mins, till wilted. Put in colander. Steam rest of spinach, add to colander. In large bowl add all cheeses, beaten eggs, spring onions, parsley, dill, salt and pepper. Stir in cooled spinach.
Lightly oil a baking tin. Line dish with 6 sheets filo pastry, brushing each sheet with olive oil.
Add in spinach filling, spread evenly over.
Layer 6 more sheets of filo over top, again brushing each sheet with oil.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bit of water. Cut pie into diamond shapes
Bake in 180 deg oven about 40 mins. Till golden.

Spaghetti with Chicken and Mushrooms

1 chicken breast, sliced (or more )
4 spring onions, sliced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
4 mushrooms, sliced
6 pieces sundried tomato
10 cherry tomatoes (or 2 larger ones, chopped)
2 tablespoons fresh basil
100 ml cream
enough pasta (any type you like)

Saute spring onions and garlic and chicken in olive oil in large frying pan till light brown
Add mushrooms and cook about 3 mins, add sundried toms
Cook pasta while all this is cooking
Add cream, cherry toms, and basil to chicken mixture
Heat through, salt & pepper to taste
Serve over cooked pasta

This is enough for 2, double for 4 people. Can leave out toms. Also can use parsley.

Spinach Lasagna

Packet instant lasagna sheets
1 ½ cups cooked spinach (steam chopped spinach until wilted)
2 cups cottage cheese
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 eggs, lightly beaten
440 g can or bottle tomato puree (it’s a bit rich to use all this so use according to taste)
¾ cup grated cheese
½ cup chopped bacon, lightly fried

Place spinach, cottage cheese, lemon juice, bacon, salt and pepper in a bowl, mix well. Stir in beaten eggs.
Lightly oil rectangle ovenproof dish. Place layer of lasagna sheets on bottom of dish. Cover with half of spinach mixture, then another layer of lasagna. Pour over about 1/3 of the tomato puree then cover with remaining spinach mixture. Finish with another layer of lasagna and then another 1/3 of tomato puree. Top with grated cheese (mozzarella or cheddar and parmesan). Bake in hot oven (200 deg.) for aboout30 mins until top is golden.

Maggie's Macaroni


Ingredients
Serves 12-16
400g large macaroni
1.2 kg pumpkin peeled & cut into small chunks, (Maggie’s favourite is a Queensland blue pumpkin)
15 g fresh rosemary roughly chopped
¼ cup verjuice
½ cup extra virgin olive oil (evoo)
250g Persian fetta
300g grated cheddar
10g sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Cheese Sauce
160g unsalted butter
160g plain flour
2 litres milk
1 tablespoon grated nutmeg
300g grated Parmesan
2 teaspoon saltFreshly ground black pepper
Method
Line a roasting tray with baking paper, add the pumpkin, chopped rosemary, sea salt & black pepper, drizzle with a little evoo & ¼ cup verjuice. Roast at 200 C for half hour until the pumpkin starts to colour and is tender.
To make the cheese sauce; melt the butter in a medium sized pot and take to nut brown then add the flour, mixing well to combine. Remove from the heat and pour the milk in slowly, using a whisk to avoid lumps. Place back on the heat and continue to stir until the sauce starts to thicken, cooking for a few more minutes. When the sauce coats the back of a spoon, add the nutmeg and stir in the grated Parmesan, stirring continuously until the cheese has melted. Taste the sauce and add a little salt if necessary – be careful to only add salt after you’ve added the cheese as often the cheese is all the salt you’ll need. Directly cover the top of the sauce with cling film and set aside until needed. Cook the macaroni in plenty of boiling salted water until al dente (15-20 minutes), drain and place in a large mixing bowl. Add the cheese sauce to the macaroni and mix through well, then add the pumpkin and toss through gently, break up the Persian fetta and add this to the macaroni too. Pour the macaroni mixture into an oven proof dish, top with the grated cheddar and bake at 200 C (given that every oven is different it could take between 10 and 20 minutes).

Peter and Susan's Blog

A perspective of South Africa while visiting in Oct 2006

The use of the old group terms of ‘Whites’, ‘Blacks’, ‘Indians’ and ‘Coloureds’ is still very evident and widely used in S. Africa. There are some wealthy Blacks (a small minority) and some Whites begging on street corners but the overwhelming reality is that economic power and status is still ascribed to skin colour. Skin colour is a significant indicator of poverty and inequality. This suggests that while there has been a change, a transformation has yet to occur in the country.
In my reflection, I would rather talk of persons/people/ South Africans and not use the old categories, but the South African context makes it difficult to not use them.

‘Whites’ in South Africa have largely found ways to maintain and replicate Apartheid – found ways to preserve it in their changed circumstances. Most live in gated, secure, homogenous communities – prisoners in their own homes and cut off from their neighbours.
A lot of whites employ and exploit poor workers from countries to the north of South Africa (so called ‘illegal immigrants’ from places such as Malawi, Zimbabwe) as servants –rather than members of the local community who have to be paid award wages.
And in the rural areas – ‘This area is full of what I call reborn racists. … A lot of farmers were initially quite changed by the 1994 election. People thought if we only treat black people humanely, we’ll be fine. So a lot of farmers took up the farm schools, drove to the city to buy books, checked on the teachers, the farm wives held clinics on primary health care, and gave lessons in sewing and nutritional cooking. But between then and now a lot has turned sour.’ (1)

‘We are a rainbow nation now – there is no racism in S. Africa’ is a refrain and the popular spin I heard on numerous occasions. Racism is in fact endemic and institutionalized. I also saw numerous instances of whites talking to others in a patronizing, bullying manner - behaviour that would be considered offensive and would not be tolerated anywhere else.
Whites constantly sing the praises of Mandela while continuing to treat Black people as they did before.

South Africans have also embraced western consumerism with gusto. There are new shopping malls going up everywhere and wealth, material possessions are flaunted as a statement of hegemony.

The elite in S. Africa are generally highly individualistic – ‘every man for themselves’, especially in business. In the 12 years of transition, in the hiatus of establishing different ways of doing things, the elite have found ways of disregarding and circumventing the law. They will cheat someone else if they can get away with it. There are a lot of anecdotes of white-owned business partnerships gone wrong, and fraud among the business elite. I noted this attitude is reflected in the driving behaviour of those who can afford their BMW’s - drivers who continuously break the law. (Speeding, overtaking and so on). These are the very people who kept warning us about crime in the country.
Crime is the new propaganda tool of the conservative whites, many of whom have left the country. (Close to 1 million since 1991.) There is even a web site that is dedicated to reporting crime in South Africa. It is the new ‘Swart Gevaar’.
There is certainly crime in South Africa but crime is not as dire as portrayed by those using this propaganda. I drove all over S. Africa, through Soweto and Kliptown, gave a lift to a man in Mthatha and stayed in a Bed & Breakfast in a township. As long as you are careful, considerate and respectful, you are generally safe in most of the country.
The crime, such as it is, is considered by the government as some kind of conspiracy and, to a point, the government is right. However, like HIV/Aids, the ANC government is also in denial and hasn’t been prepared to take on crime as a serious issue in the country and this has only served to add fuel to those who want to use it as propaganda.
The one thing many whites we spoke to desperately want is the restoration of the death penalty (or a free passage to citizenship in Australia). This is also a big issue in the media.
There is a belief that the death penalty will somehow restore ‘sanity’ in the country. What they really mean is that a pillar of apartheid will be restored.

A recent visit to Uganda, gave me cause to ponder on why there was little evidence of crime or begging in the streets in that part of Africa, even though poverty is more widespread. My theory is that in Uganda the government structures allow for the preservation of traditional leadership to some extent. Almost every Ugandan also identifies with a clan, a village, some land and traditional authority. There are traditional structures at the markets, within households, in local areas, at funerals and so on and everyone has a place where their voice is counted – women, children, farmers, grandparents.
In South Africa, more so than the rest of Africa, traditions have been tossed overboard and the people have opted for structures and for what is new from the West. But the problem is more complex than mere colonial corruption of the old traditions. The ‘new’, with its lack of organic roots within the community and its affiliation with Apartheid, has never had legitimacy. The result is corruption, crime and often bureaucratic chaos.

Into this context, Mandela and the ANC have tried to forge a new South Africa.

The public ideology of the ANC and the government in South Africa is socialist and tries to embrace the idea of ‘Ubuntu’ –i.e. togetherness, goodwill and sharing among the people. Nelson Mandela puts it this way:
‘My mother’s sister is my mother;
My uncle’s son is my brother;
My brother’s child is my son.’ (2)
Mandela continually emphasizes that the ANC is a collective and whenever he receives recognition he insists ‘it is for all my people’. In his farewell speech to Parliament, he said: ‘To the extent to which I was able to achieve anything, I know this is because I am the product of the people of South Africa.’
Mandela calls for sacrifice and commitment from all members of the community, for the community and for the good of all.

This ‘collective’ idea, however, flies in the face of the extreme individualism practiced by the elite in South Africa.

There is a huge tension within the ANC government.
On the one hand it wants to improve its image internationally, (hosting the FIFA World cup, renaming and rebuilding its International Airport, the Gautrain) and also continue to attract international investment and compete with other economies by emulating market fundamentalism/capitalism.
On the other hand it is trying to redress issues in housing, health, HIV/Aids, education, employment (BEE – ‘Black Economic Empowerment), and it cannot do both.
The market fundamentalism and flirting with international capitalism has meant the wealth of the elite (mainly whites) has increased since 1994 and unemployment has increased significantly for the majority Blacks.

Following a protest conducted by white students at the University of South Africa (demanding to be regarded as “African’ for purposes of job opportunities and so on), there was a debate in the media about whether white South Africans could be considered ‘African’ – an issue of identity.
My feeling is that while there remains two worlds in South Africa and as long as most whites spend their time carping and whinging about South Africa and refusing to take responsibility for doing their bit, then they cannot claim to be ‘African’. Being ‘African’ in the South African context means being born in and identifying with South Africa; acknowledging past injustices; being committed to improving South Africa for all and, if you are a member of the elite, being prepared to make sacrifices that will lead to a redistribution of wealth.


Whites were offered the opportunity to become true Africans, to participate in Mandela’s collective, to change and to fully participate in the establishing the new South Africa. They were offered forgiveness through the Truth and Reconciliation process. Instead of taking up this opportunity, they have emphatically rejected it and gone back to their old ways.

AFRICAN TALES - E-mails from our trip to Africa

1 African Tangles
After surviving 18+hours flying time compounded by jet lag we have spent a lot of time in the tangle of Ugandan traffic. We are very pleased we did not decide to drive ourselves.
Highlights have included:
walk through Mabirra Forest with 218 varieties of butterflies;
eating bananas (including Gunzu, a local roadside snack of charcoal roasted bananas);
gin and tonic on the verandah as the sun was setting over the Nile (at its source) as giant ugly Maribou storks settled in the tree tops;
being woken up by the loud croaking sounds of bull frogs in the garden below;
Ugandan people (generalizing) are laid back, friendly, courteous, educated and with brilliant white teeth;

Overall Uganda is a surprise; the poverty makes South Africa look like paradise.
The drive from Entebbe through Kampala to Jinja was a mind boggling panorama of human activity - people fetching water, shops selling anything and everything imaginable, children carrying babies, garbage, bicycles, minibuses and smile and waves to the Muzungu (white people.) It appears chaotic - a real tangle but everything kind of works itself out. We are both well and enjoying the real experience.

2 African Tables
The kaleidoscope of sights, smells and sounds of Africa continues - filling the mind and heart - challenging one's ideas about a range of issues. Many of these experiences come from sitting around tables in varying circumstances.
The 1st of these was in Kampala. On the Monday we did the tourist thing - went to the museum, King's burial place/palace and the Bahai temple. We had lunch at 1 of the many roadside cafes - a small rickety table - where muzungus (whites) would rarely eat. We ate African food, maize stew, ground nut sauces. Susan was honoured with the fish head with her rice. Dinner that night was at a French bistro - quite different.
The road from Kampala to fort Portal (300 Km) was excellent (built by Yugoslavs in 1980 just before the country collapsed). We had a brief stop in a town for the ultimate in fast food. At least 20 children/teens rush up to the car with all sorts of food clamoring for attention. We had chapatis and gonzu (roasted banana).
The guesthouse is nestled in a valley with a view of the Ruwenzori Mtns - very comfortable and friendly. Meals occur around a large table where everyone from all parts of the world share ideas, experiences and sometimes a heated discussion - usually about solving the problems of Africa. The food is delicious- soups, fresh organic vegies and salads; meat, fish and dessert. Yesterday we had a wild trip to the other side of the Ruwenzori Mtns to visit a small village on the Equator and Congo border that has formed a farmers' cooperative using micro finance. Very interesting but that is another email. We drove through a fantastic African thunderstorm on the way home.

3 African Triumph
If you can recall a stressful time in your life when you were living 1 day at a time - 1 step at a time. This is the reality for most Ugandans all the time. There is so much poverty, unemployment, diseases (malaria, HIV), history of conflict and of being let down by politicians and donor groups that life is a real and constant struggle. The legacy of conflicts and of Idi Amin's regime means that industrial activity is still limited, there is a lack of infrastructure, hospitals and rural health clinics are struggling, the roads are full of potholes, utilities are not maintained properly, (power/electricity is on for 24 hrs and off for the next 24hrs).
In the wealthy west we rush to support an aid agency/donor group but the experience for Ugandans of donor groups is often negative. Sponsoring an individual child to get an education in a village often ignores the context of the local community and has a negative domino effect on others living in poverty in the same village. Donor groups are also accused of spending their money on expensive consultants and 4 wheel drives (yes even Oxfam) or workshops in highly priced hotels where 2 night's accommodation is more than a family’s annual income in a rural village. They often create a donor dependency or else withdraw finance from a project as quickly as it was allocated without proper skills training or follow up to make the project successful.
There is also a story about education, about industrial working conditions, about the relationship to people of Indian background, about clans and different tribal groups, pop.growth (third largest in the world), About corruption, and child headed families and about the culture Uganda has developed out of their dire and unpredictable past.

But there is hope and there is a story of triumph over the odds. There are poor villages where Ugandans have formed co-operatives through micro-finance, (a small loan of sometimes as little as Au$45 for6 months to buy seeds, tools, or a 2nd hand sewing machine) and through the co-op are gradually gaining control of their own affairs and reducing poverty in the local community. But even here there are still huge challenges particularly in the form of trade barriers. The small coffee farmer in the co-op struggles to compete with the big companies and overcome the barriers to accessing wealthy markets. The West can help by calling for the lifting of trade barriers on African countries.
There is triumph in the Ugandan generosity to others and in their free-will given friendship, their spirit and humour. There are angels in Uganda - people who are highly committed to the country's transformation. Despite the dire poverty, there is very little crime or begging in Uganda. One of the highlights for us is to be able to walk through a busy and chaotic market in Kampala and know you are probably safer than in Hindley St. in Adelaide or in most places in Sth Africa.

4 African Tracks
We have been to areas of Uganda without power/computers for the last week or
so. These tales may be out of sync or delayed and no 3 is still coming. Here are a few tracks we have made. We climbed the Ruwenzori Mtns closest to Fort Portal. Very steep in parts. About half way up we went into a small grass hut belonging to a sangoma (witch doctor). After some singing and dancing and from the way the sticks floated in the "water of the gods" he divined our time in Uganda would be good for us and blessed us for a safe journey. After a hard climb further up into the Mtns. we visited a traditional blacksmith. He used recycled metal to make knives and farming tools of all sizes. The scenery was spectacular.
Another track took us to Semuliki Nat. Park - a jungle close to the Congo border - with monkeys crashing in the canopy overhead we walked to the hot springs bubbling out of the earth. Our guide cooked us lunch (eggs, potatoes, matoke - cooked bananas)in the hot springs. Another track took us to the Kibale Forest - famous for its chimps. We saw 6 of the 9 primates within an hour including a group of chimps, mainly mother and babies. We are continuing to enjoy the generous hospitality of the locals and our host Maurice who runs the guest house and scrumptious food and conversation continues. Off to Bwera on the Congo border and Queen Elizabeth Nat.Park for a few days.

5. African Towels
Picture a dusty frontier town in the Wild West or something out of an old
Humphrey Bogart movie and then you can get a picture of the town of Bwera 2 kms from the Congo border. We are staying at the Safari Park Hotel (Yes, the local 'Saloon Bar'). No electricity, only cold water and nylon /polyester towel that wouldn't dry you in an Australian drought. We managed to secure the VIP suite for 24000 UGS ($18.00 per night) for 3 nights.....it was very basic.
While in Bwera we took part in a 3 day cultural/civil society fair with 500 Ugandan participants. We even met and shook hands with the Ugandan Minister for Defence!
We visited Hillside Secondary School nearby that caters for local kids in poverty. We didn't realize how much we take for granted in Australia. A school with no electricity, no running water, dirt floors, one shelf of books (old text books we would have put in the waste bin back in the 70's)- this was the library. The school has 200 + students, no discipline problems and teachers are paid a pittance ($28.00 per fortnight). A place well deserving of donations and support. Unfortunately there are 100's of schools like this in Uganda and thousands in Africa. The problem is overwhelming. We managed to team up with 3 Belgians working in Uganda and made a brief foray across the border into the Congo. There was a huge market just across the border from Bwera and we negotiated with the Ugandan police in their bamboo border post, who took our names and escorted us across the border. The crossing was something out of a movie - we bypassed long queue of heavily laden vehicles and bicycles that looked like refugees from a conflict zone.
We crossed a tiny bridge that was the border and then were allowed to roam the market for an hour as long as we didn't take photos. We saw a lot of nylon/polyester towels for sale. We bought some lovely cotton textiles and returned to Uganda, tipping the Ugandan policeman a mere $3.50, he farewelled us with a smile - not sure whether it was for the tip or from relief at returning the muzungos safely back to Uganda

6. African Tails
After Bwera, we spent 3 days on the floor of the western section of the African Rift Valley - a warm humid place with lakes, forest, savannah and lots of animals.
Richard from Kabarole Tours and his son Sam (14) were our companions on this trip.
Our first stop was at Mweya Camp in Queen Elizabeth Nat Park. A group of
Warthogs came grazing 3 m's from the door to our room soon after we unpacked. They must be one of the ugliest creatures on earth, but Susan reckons their eyelashes and swishing tails are cute.
On a boat trip in the channel between Lake George and Lake Edward, we saw Hippos by the hundreds - swimming and sunning themselves; Nile crocodiles, Hyena, Buffalo, Antelope and many varieties of birds. The following morning we traveled south to Ishasha along one of the worst roads we have ever been on - it took 3 hours to travel 42 kms.
The camp was on a small meandering river that formed the border with the Congo (again). We stayed in a Banda (a round hut with a grass roof) - basic but comfortable. Washing was from a plastic bowl with water from a nearby borehole pump.
We saw many more animals including a female lion climbing a tree, hippos quite close, elephant, herds of antelope and more Warthogs with their antenna tails. We also found ourselves about 3 metres from a large male lion sitting regally in a sphinx-like position staring into the distance over our shoulders. The only evidence that he registered our presence was the slight irritation in the swishing of his tail.
On the 14 Sept. we had an interesting experience when we caught a very full local bus (roosters, bunches of bananas and all) from Fort Portal to Kampala (4 hours) and then on to Entebbe (another hour).
It is sad leaving Uganda - it has certainly been an interesting experience. Tomorrow (Sunday) we travel with Felicity and Basil on another bus from Johannesburg to Maputo in Mozambique. We'll be there for the rest of the week. We wonder what Mozambique and South Africa has in store for us?

7. African Tootle
What was a surprisingly pleasant 10 hour bus tootle from Johannesburg became intriguing after a thorough search through all the passengers' luggage at the Mozambique border as well as the bus being stopped by police 3 times before we got to Maputo (there was something afoot but we will never know). In an eerie similarity to East Timor, Mozambique achieved independence in 1975 after lengthy resistance by Frelimo to the Portuguese colonial government. (In fact this Monday 25 September is a public holiday in Mozambique to celebrate the beginning of the armed struggle.) The subsequent 15 year battle with apartheid S. African backed rebel group has left the country and its economy ravaged and rural areas riddled with land mines. Maputo, the capital, is however unique in Africa. There is a feeling that transformation is happening here - there is a huge challenge but the potential is there. It could be the Riviera of Africa in the future. It remains one of the worlds poorest countries.
Maputo is more organized than Kampala and has a great Portuguese/Mediterranean/European ambience. Some of the architecture is truly fascinating - from Art Deco houses, to the magnificent railway station of a bygone era (designed by the architect of the Eiffel tower). Also the Iron House, made entirely of iron, for a past governor (C19th), but never used - too hot! There are wide tree-lined streets (boulevards), parks and a great market that partly resembles Adelaide Central Market 40 years ago. One could explore Maputo by street names alone viz. Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Ho chi Minh, Salvadore Allende, Olaf Palme, Guerra Popular and lots more. We have felt reasonably safe here, a few street hawkers hassling us (probably worse in Bali) but no big deal.
We tootled off by ferry (hour and half) to Inhaca Island for 3 nights.
Mozambique is famous for its seafood (prawns, crayfish, and calamari) and cashew nuts. On the island and in Maputo we enjoyed huge platters of scrumptious seafood (usually grilled with garlic, lemon) washed down with the local 2M beer, at prices we would only dream of in Oz. While on Inhaca island we also took a local boat to the nearby Portuguese Island. We took a lazy stroll around the sun-drenched island (about 6 KMs), with it's palm trees and white sand, collecting shells - shells that you can only buy in souvenir shops these days.
On Monday we leave Johannesburg and begin our grand S African tootle in our
Toyota Yaris hired car.

8 African Tapestry
You know you're in South Africa when you are driving 20KM over the 80KM speed limit and the elderly man driving behind you is impatient to overtake. Overall the signposting and quality of S. African roads are good. We celebrated S. Africa's Heritage Day at the "Cradle of Humankind' near
Pretoria (now called Tshwane). This is a huge modern museum at the archaeological site of fossils of the first humans. There was a range of cultural activities, hundreds of people, many in their traditional dress - young people, old people from all groups - a tapestry of the new S. Africa.
We have spent some time in a town called Clarens in an area called The Golden Gate. When we arrived we thought we had taken a wrong turn and were in Bright or Halls Gap in Victoria. A pretty town with coffee shops, craft and art galleries and surrounded by the magnificent Maluti Mtns. Largely unknown outside S. Africa, this is a spectacular place with high mountains and a picture postcard (or tapestry) whichever way you turn. For a bit of exercise we climbed a part of the Drakensburg Mtns. - a 4 hour round trip - up a steep often rocky path - with precipitous sides. Again spectacular scenery - Susan had to be encouraged across one part of the path, high above a valley, which had fallen in. Scary but she did it!
On Thursday we crossed yet another a border - this time into Lesotho. This mountain kingdom has a population of 2 million people, and like many countries in Africa is very poor. Up to 80% of the males work in neighbouring S. Africa to support the family income. A very steep 200KM drive up and over the Maluti Mtns. makes the Alpine Way in Australia feel like drive to the local supermarket. Hairpin bends on a road full of rock falls and piles of snow when we reached the top.
When we arrived back at the guesthouse in Clarens (S. Africa) we discovered we had a flat tyre. We were pleased that this was the worst thing that had happened.
Uganda, Congo Republic, Mozambique, Lesotho and S. Africa - a truly African tapestry.
We are both well and on Monday begin our slow drive down toward Knysna and
Cape Town.

8. African Tether
South Africa is blessed with spectacular landscape - mountains, rivers, great beaches, flora and animals. Much of it unknown to the rest of the world. Over the last few weeks we have been enjoying the best of it.

We had a bit of excitement as we were leaving the small isolated town of Port St Johns on the Wild Coast. It had been raining heavily all night and as we were beginning our journey south, a cliff face adjacent to the road gave way with 2 large rocks slamming into the side of the car. Fortunately we were OK and our hire car was insured. We swapped it for another in East London.

Traveling in South Africa is again an opportunity for deep reflection and debate. While on one hand the landscape is beautiful, it is also an experience in 2 worlds.
One world is the elite, rich, privileged life for the majority of whites - and they have got richer since the change of government - large luxurious mansions/shopping malls etc, expensive cars (BMW, Mercedes, Alfas etc.
Wealth is flaunted - almost a statement of hegemony.
The other world of the black population is largely one of poverty and second class citizens. Unemployment has increased significantly since 1994. There has been an improvement in housing - there are still very basic shacks and even the new brick/concrete house are small and massed together - all look the same and are massed together on the edge of towns.
But it is a complex issue........
It is not called apartheid anymore, but it still exists. White South
Africans were given an opportunity to change with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission but it appears for the majority of whites the olive branch was emphatically rejected. It's a country and culture, for the most part, tethered to the past. One wonders when it will truly break free.

9. African Treasures
Dear everyone,
Having done lots of driving, we have concluded that the driving behaviour of most S. Africans is scary and irresponsible. Remember that elderly person that we spoke about in our earlier e-mail trying to overtake? We now have another driver tail-gating us, trying to overtake at 120 KMs per hour on a double white line while talking on their mobile phone.
We have spent the last week in the most stunning landscape including beautiful beaches, lots of wild flowers, lofty mountains and valleys - we have lost count of the number of mountain passes we have driven over and through (avoiding rock fall areas where we can!).
The Cape including the Garden Route is a truly beautiful part of S. Africa.
We spent some time in Knysna, Sedgefield, Calitzdorp, Montagu and are know in a self catering apartment in Bantry Bay, a beach suburb of Cape Town. The weather so far has been sparkling and through our bedroom window we are enjoying the sound of waves crashing on the rocks below.
The highlights of the past week have been:-
-an early evening swim in the pool in Montagu that is fed by hot springs coming from deep underground. The water is apparently slightly radio-active but said to be beneficial to health. Neither of us were glowing in the dark afterwards.
-farmers' market at Sedgefield with its fresh cheeses, breads, and other treasures + all the S. African favorites - gemsquash, biltong, koeksisters, vetkoek, melk tart, and so on.
-Cango Caves - very similar to Jenolan Caves near Sydney
-Climbing up Lion's Head adjacent to Table Mountain
-swimming in the icy cold Atlantic Ocean at Clifton Beach with its mountain backdrop
-the drive on Chapman’s Peak and Cape Point
-re visit to District 6 Museum
-Staying in this cosy apartment in a magnificent location -weather to treasure -visit to Cape Town Art Gallery -a walk around Cape Town city

11 African Township
Despite the protestations and advice from a number of others, we decided to stay in a Bed & Breakfast in an African Township.
We stayed in MaNeos B&B in Langa Township near Cape Town.
The B&B is run by Thandiwe Peter and her daughter Neo Moathodi. It was an interesting and enlightening experience.
Staying in a township is like stepping back in time – into the 1950’s. Housing is small and basic and the furniture, small kitchen, décor (vinyl on the floor) pictures on the wall, ornaments, brought back memories of our childhood homes. This was reinforced by the religious values (grace before meals), people walking up and down the street interacting with each other and others popping into the B&B for a chat or for a cup of tea. We spent an evening in a Shebeen (informal tavern) and sat around a table and over a few beers chatted with the locals while Cape Town Jazz music blared from the ‘Hi-Fi’ set. We talked about education, crime in South Africa, politics, religion and how to fix up the world. The people of Langa seem to like their religion and their alcohol.
Thandiwe and Neo shared heartbreaking stories of the losing battle with HIV/Aids – such as 8 year olds caring for their siblings as both parents are in bed with the disease.
Despite the vigorous campaigns, Thandiwe said that as long as there is widespread poverty and some people selling sex to put food on the table, there will be Aids.
We visited a community centre and a crèche. The crèche was in a shipping container and the 58 2 – 5 year olds sang ‘Nkosi Sikelela’ to us with real gusto.
Before we left Cape Town for Johannesburg, we visited the small fishing village of Paternoster, 100 km north of Cape Town. We were surprised at the building development all along the coast. There seem to be few constraints on development and we wonder how future generations will judge this activity.

12 African ‘Totsiens’
We’re back home!
The trip was challenging and hard work at times – but every bit of it was worthwhile.
Uganda was a real eye-opener. Despite the poverty, we will remember the beauty of the place and the warmth and the spirit of the people and the ‘angels’ working in their communities.
Mozambique is slowly recovering from its past traumas and is a place with lots of tourist potential.
South Africa has magnificent scenery, easy to get around, good food & wine and so on and the tensions and complexities continually challenge one’s perceptions and beliefs. S. Africa is still in a state of transition and we will take a keen interest in the outcome over the next 15 years. We predict there will be some shifts of seismic proportions to come in the future.

Being away for 2 + months – especially in Africa - has made us realize how much we take for granted in Aus: The wealth and relative lack of poverty; the clean air and open spaces; the safety on the roads; garbage collection; electricity and clean tap water and so on; and we couldn’t help but notice how clean and litter free our streets are.
Yes it’s true – we also noted on our return how easy-going, relaxed, multicultural, laid back, friendly and helpful Australians are generally. It is interesting to ponder on these kinds of cultural differences between people of different countries.
On the other hand we were struck by the superficiality of the commercial media in Australia – it is awful!
